about the program

This Lent, we invite you to journey with us as we take one hour a day for a retreat amid daily life. Join us for any or all of the nine days of reflection, music, and preaching. Join together with us as a faith-filled community for God’s healing and mercy in our lives. Be nourished and inspired each day as you open yourself to the Spirit and experience a grace that transforms.

The Novena’s origins date to 1633, when tradition says St. Francis Xavier appeared to a priest in a healing vision and promised that all who would earnestly ask his intercession with God for nine consecutive days would experience profound grace. The Novena survives today as an annual tradition which is continually updated to remain relevant to the daily lives of retreat-goers.

All are welcome!

about the theme

This year’s theme, I am the Beloved! is a proclamation that claims and names our identity as the Beloved of God, which confronts so many aspects of life, including institutions and systems that attempt to denigrate our human dignity and creation in the Image of God. To say, "I am the Beloved," is to claim that God created each of us with unique purpose and gifts, and that all aspects of our being are sacred. Beloved is the core of our being, and our Hope stems from that truth.

Through the Novena, we desire to share the many faces and identities of the Beloved, to inspire hope for a Church that honors God's creation, and to model examples of courage and belonging in and for our communities. “I am the Beloved” is more than a sentiment, it is a deep truth, a taproot of our creation that shapes our understanding of everything.

about the presenters

Malcolm Xavier Nelson serves as the principal of his grade school alma mater, St. Therese Catholic Academy. He has Teaching and Educational Leadership degrees from Washington State University, University of Portland, and Notre Dame. At ten-years old, Malcolm knew he would one day be an educator and told his then principal Eileen Gray, he would be back for her job one day. Having accomplished as much, he is excited to lead St. Therese Academy in their 96th school year.

Sarah Pericich-Lopez is the Faith Communities Organizer for the Intercommunity Peace and Justice Center. Through her Theology studies at Gonzaga University and Master of Divinity at Loyola University Chicago, Sarah fell in love with Ignatian Spirituality and the Jesuit commitment to social justice. Sarah’s community organizing work involves feminist theologies, disability theologies, peacebuilding and empowering youth. Sarah lives in Seattle with her partner, Alan, and corgi, Watson. In her free time, she prioritizes working out, a love of creating experiences within her home and delighting in the coffee culture of Seattle.

Fr. Matthew Pyrć, SJ, serves as one of the part-time regional promoters for the Northwest region of the USA West province and is the Parochial Vicar at St. Joseph Parish in Seattle. He has been a member of the Society of Jesus since 2006 and was ordained a priest in 2014. He has a Licentiate of Sacred Theology and Masters of Sacred Theology from the Jesuit School of Theology of SCU at Berkeley, and a Master of Divinity degree from Regis College of the Toronto School of Theology. When he is not working or meeting with people you may find Fr. Pyrć riding his bike, kayaking, or laughing at memes.
